1.1. RME & TotalMix
You can use RME TotalMix to "fold back" an output to an input. To do so, control-click an output in TotalMix. Audio will now be routed from that output back to the corresponding input. This is similar to connecting an output to an input physically, but with software. You should now see a signal in Spectre if you choose the correct input in Preferences > Audio > Hardware.
Consult the chapter "Recording to a subgroup" in RME's documentation for more information regarding this feature.
The screenshot shows a pair of Logic outputs and below a pair of unused outputs looped back by control-clicking on their labels (which turn red).
NOTE: Not all users may have spare outputs. If you use software monitoring in your DAW and route an active channel back, you may encounter severe feedback.
Tested with an RME Fireface 800.
(Many thinks to Peter Ostry for this information.)
